CHICKEN MANSIONS, SWAMP HORSES, AND THERAPY FOR VETERANS

WEST SPRINGFIELD, MA, September 21, 2022 – Do chicken mansions really exist? Are there horses who thrive in swampy conditions (and still manage to have great feet)? Can equine-assisted therapy really help you cope with trauma? If you’ve listened to the most recent episode of the official Equine Affaire podcast, you’d already know the answers to these questions – and more!

This month, Equine Affaire’s blended episode of Horses in the Morning on the Horse Radio Network features interviews with three key participants of the upcoming 2022 Equine Affaire in Massachusetts. Sponsored by Horizon Structures, the September episode gives listeners a glimpse of some special guests that will appear in the Breed Pavilion, the trade show, and in A Horse for Heroes, a special event feature taking place on Veterans Day. This fall’s Equine Affaire will take place on November 10-13, 2022, at the Eastern States Exposition in West Springfield, Massachusetts.

“In this episode, we really wanted to highlight the diversity of everything we have to offer at our event,” said Allison Rehnborg, who co-hosts the show with Glenn Hebert of the Horse Radio Network. “That’s why this month’s guests all represent several different parts of the expo.”

The episode’s first interview is with Pamela Landskroener, owner of Lazy Dog Acres in Maryland. A member of the Carolina Marsh Tacky Association, Landskroener breeds, trains, shows, and sells Marsh Tackies. This fall, she’ll be bringing two of her horses to exhibit in the Breed Pavilion at Equine Affaire and help spread awareness about the breed, which is listed as critically endangered and worthy of further study on the Equus Survival Trust’s 2022 Equine Global Conservation List.

Next, Jill Siragusa – chief marketing officer for Horizon Structures – called in to catch up with Glenn and Allison and share about how horse owners can order custom structures for their farm or home from the company. Horizon Structures is a proud sponsor of Equine Affaire as well as the title sponsor of this month’s episode. Based out of Atglen, Pa., Horizon Structures sells high quality prefabricated structures made by the Amish in the United States. Whether you’re in the market for horse barns, dog kennels, outdoor living spaces, chicken coops (yes, including chicken mansions!), kids’ playsets, or greenhouses, Horizon Structures and their crews can design, build, deliver, and assemble the structure of your dreams. Want to see their products for yourself? Come to Equine Affaire and check out some examples of their work on site at the ESE.

The third segment of the show featured a special interview with Tara Mahoney, CEO, and Ryan Casavant, COO, of the Equine Immersion Project. The Equine Immersion Project’s mission is to support service members and their families through the power of horses by offering equine-assisted therapies and activities. Through these activities, participants can learn coping strategies, interpersonal skills, mindfulness, leadership skills, empathy, and more. This fall, the EIP is bringing its services to Equine Affaire to minister to veterans, military, and first responders with an interactive activity on Friday, November 11 – Veterans Day. Mahoney will also be presenting demonstrations about how horses can help first responders and military. To learn more about the work of the EIP, listen to this valuable interview – then learn more at equineimmersionproject.com.

Headlining clinicians Jonathan Field, Pat Parelli, Steve Lantvit, Lorie Duff, and Scott Purdum will teach clinics focused on general horsemanship, including topics such as recognizing body language, simplifying lead changes, steps for starting young horses, improving departures and transitions, and achieving better balance in the saddle. Meanwhile, discipline-specific clinicians will present on topics such as eventing, dressage, hunter/jumpers, Western dressage, driving, vaulting, and more. Read on to learn more about our featured presenters and for a full list of discipline-specific clinicians!

Jonathan Field grew up in both English and Western saddles before becoming a full-time cowboy on one of the largest cattle ranches in Canada. Jonathan decided to become a horseman after surviving a near-death accident that resulted in the amputation of his left hand at the wrist. That ordeal taught him all about how to face challenges in life, and since then, he has dedicated his life to helping people develop their skills and connections with horses and to pursue their dreams. His foundation training program is embraced by people around the world, from those new to horses or those regaining their confidence to elite competitors and industry professionals, and everyone in between. Jonathan’s trademark style prioritizes creating an environment where people can enjoy learning and developing their ability to overcome obstacles, all while having fun. Jonathan is a two-time Road to the Horse finalist, a TEDx presenter, a stunt man in several major motion pictures, and a recipient of the Jack Brainard Horseman’s Award. He is also a horseman, published author, and renowned international clinician.

Starting in 1982, Pat Parelli began creating a natural horsemanship program to improve the relationship between humans and horses. Pat promoted the concept of love, language, and leadership. Pat’s desire to spread this knowledge to the world rose in him after watching his mentors Tom Dorrance and Ray Hunt work with horses. In 1984, Pat began teaching clinics, and in 1991, he coined the name Natural Horsemanship. Natural Horsemanship has become a viable and important aspect of the international horse industry and continues to expand and influence the way in which horses are trained. Pat provides amazing talent for both training horses and teaching people. Today, Parelli Natural Horsemanship and the program have spread to 76 countries, over a million people, and have improved the lives of horses around the world.

Steve Lantvit is a multiple World Champion and Reserve title winner in ranch horse competition who believes in training versatile, well-rounded, and capable horses and riders through confidence, mutual respect, and solid communication. As an award-winning clinician and trainer, he builds confidence in horses and riders through cross training and exposure to a variety of situations, improving their performance and attitude whether on the trail or in the show ring. Steve has used his decades of experience in the horse industry to create his own line of training aids for the everyday horse person, including training DVDs, tack, and other equipment. He travels the country teaching clinics in addition to training horses, teaching lessons, and hosting clinics at his ranch in LaPorte, IN. Steve also shares his training insights through a weekly television series, “Sure in the Saddle,” on RFD-TV.

Lorie Duff is an internationally renowned Canadian equestrian trainer and clinician, a Canadian provincial equine judge, an equine business consultant, and a motivational speaker. Born and raised on a scenic dairy farm overlooking the ocean in Topsail, Newfoundland, Lorie credits her parents and “the simple farm life” with how she developed her philosophy of horsemanship. Lorie’s philosophy of communication, trust, and respect helps establish a safe and solid inter-disciplinary platform. Her philosophy also supports and enhances the continued mutual learning of humans and horses that work together. Lorie’s successes from teaching her program have taken her throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. One of her greatest achievements was to be the “First Ever Western Performer” invited to the RCMP Sunset Ceremonies for two consecutive years (2016 and 2017) to showcase the Western discipline and demonstrate her horsemanship philosophies. Today, Lorie owns and operates Liberty Lane Farm, just outside Ottawa, and enjoys traveling across Canada, the United States, and Europe to teach and help as many people as she can.

Scott Purdum created his Advantage Horsemanship™ educational training program with a goal to assist others in expanding their horsemanship knowledge and bring horses and people together through mutual trust and respect. Scott’s passion for horses as a youth, riding hunters and pleasure horses, led him to an internship with top-rated Quarter Horse trainer, Ken Adkins, of West Virginia, and studies in equine science at the University of Maryland. He has authored several articles featuring problem solving training exercises and produced the popular training DVD, “Where Do We Start?” Scott resides in Union Bridge, MD, where he offers clinics, trains horses, runs a Professional Trainer program, and provides riding instruction. He also travels throughout the country offering large group sessions and one-on-one instruction.

In addition to these renowned presenters, Equine Affaire is proud to present discipline-specific clinicians including Gina Miles (eventing), Nona Garson (hunter/jumper), Bill Warren (dressage), Sterling Graburn (driving), Jane Karol (dressage), Chad Crider (barrel racing), Leslie Lopardo (Western dressage), Karen Black (reined cow horse), Michael Gascon (easy gaited horses), Sally Batton (The Athletic Equestrian and Equicize), Ty Evans (mules), Carrie Brandt & Laura Benson (Icelandics), Caleb Carinci Asch (lunging), Joyleen Seymour (Mounted Games), the Copper Hill Vaulters (vaulting), and many, many more. Each exhibitor is required to purchase (or share) a tack stall in addition to a horse stall, and tack stalls are $120 each. Rental of an exhibit stall in the Horse & Farm Exhibits area includes one four-day adult ticket to Equine Affaire per stall (a $55 value); a one-line listing of stall number, farm name, breed of horse, and phone number or web site address in the event program; and a listing of the farm or horse owner name, breed of horse, and phone number or web site address on equineaffaire.com prior to and during the event. Although Equine Affaire is a four-day event, exhibitors must commit to exhibiting for at least three days and specify in advance whether they plan to exhibit Thursday through Saturday, or Friday through Sunday. Shavings, straw, and hay will be available for purchase on site. Possible participation options with the Breed Pavilion are also available – just ask when you apply!

Do you have a horse for sale? Purchase a “For Sale” stall! With thousands of horse lovers in attendance, there’s no better place to market your horses for sale in the hopes of finding the perfect buyer. “For Sale” stalls are in-line stalls located among other Horse & Farm Exhibit stalls. Rental of a “For Sale” stall is only $160/stall and includes:

  • One four-day adult ticket to Equine Affaire per stall (a $55 value)
  • A descriptive “For Sale” sign to post on the stall
  • A free listing pre-event on equineaffaire.com that will provide the horse’s breed, age, gender, name, discipline, price, and stall location
  • A one-line listing of stall number, horse owner’s name, breed of horse, and phone number or web site address in the event program distributed for free to adult attendees, and
  • The opportunity to give interested adult customers the chance to test-ride their horses in a schooling arena at the event (with the proper releases)

If you rent a “For Sale” stall, you must commit to exhibiting for at least two days, and specify your date of arrival in advance. If your horse is sold before the second day, you may substitute another horse for sale. Horse owners who rent “For Sale” stalls may also rent a tack stall next to their “For Sale” stall(s) for an additional $120 to store bedding, tack, feed, and other equipment at the show.

NEW! This year at Equine Affaire, horse owners can opt to showcase their sale horses in special Sale Horse Spotlights scheduled on Thursday and Saturday of the event. Sale Horse Spotlight slots must be scheduled in advance. During a Sale Horse Spotlight, horse owners can ride, drive, or lead their sale horses in the coliseum while the horse’s name, owner name, and other pertinent information is announced to the crowd. It’s a great way to catch a potential buyer’s eye and show off all your horse can do!

Are you a rescue or sanctuary looking to find adopters for horses? Join the Adoption Affaire! In cooperation with the ASPCA Right Horse initiative, the Adoption Affaire features adoptable horses of a variety of ages, sizes, temperaments, and disciplines. All 34 past episodes are available for listening (or bingeing!) now on equineaffaire.com/home/podcast. Get caught up today so you can start fresh on Thursday, July 21, when Equine Affaire’s debut episode will air as part of Horses in the Morning!

With this new merger, Equine Affaire’s podcast will become a monthly feature of Horses in the Morning, which is the world’s leading daily morning podcast for the horse world and reaches listeners in over 90 countries.

The HITM/EA episodes will be co-hosted by Glenn Hebert (founder of the Horse Radio Network and founder and co-host of Horses in the Morning) and Allison Rehnborg, who has been hosting the EA podcast since its inaugural episode.

“Equine Affaire happens twice a year for four days – once in April and once in November – and offers an amazingly concentrated dose of all things equine and education,” Rehnborg said. “What I love about our podcast is that we get a chance to bring that feeling of super concentrated horsiness to our listeners once a month, so it’s a way for fans to enjoy the Affaire all year long.”

For four seasons, the show has focused on guests’ personal journeys of getting started in the horse industry and shared their stories from past Equine Affaires, as well as tips for how to enjoy the expo to the fullest. New episodes will share these same qualities, but also showcase a new focus on educational equine content.

“Podcast interviews can be a really personal way for listeners to connect with guests,” Rehnborg said. “We’re still going to keep that personal touch, but we’re also going to focus on education with these new HITM episodes. Equine Affaire is all about education for the horse industry, so it only makes sense that our podcast should focus on that, too. And if you know anything about Glenn, who’s going to be co-hosting with me, you know he’ll be bringing plenty of jokes. It’s going to be a great time.”

ELEVATING THE EQUESTRIAN EXPERIENCE IN OHIO

LONDON, OH, April 21, 2022 – Earlier in April, Equine Affaire made a triumphant return to the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, hosting happy crowds of horse lovers and equine enthusiasts for four days of equine-themed education, entertainment, and enjoyment. This year’s event was especially momentous because it was the first time Equine Affaire had taken place in the state of Ohio since 2019. After three long years away, excited fans, presenters, exhibitors, vendors, volunteers and Equine Affaire staff welcomed the return of their favorite equine exposition and equestrian gathering with open arms.

“Our staff members have missed putting on this event the past two years. We conducted a successful in-person event in Massachusetts this past November, but it felt especially wonderful to return to the Ohio Expo Center this year since it’s so close to our London office,” said Coagi Long, president of Equine Affaire. “We also experienced a 7% increase in ticket sales compared to previous years. That was a great welcome back!”

On April 7-10, 2022, tens of thousands of eager visitors streamed through the gates of the Ohio Expo Center to attend North America’s premier equine exposition and equestrian gathering. Crowds enjoyed attending more than 150 educational sessions, clinics, and demonstrations presented by some of the nation’s most renowned horsemen and horsewomen, including Craig Cameron, Jim Thomas, J.R. Robles, Lynn Palm, and Warwick Schiller. They also experienced the joy of meeting a variety of different breeds of horses in the Breed Pavilion, including Akhal-Tekes, International Drum Horses, and more, as well as networking with dozens of equine professionals in the popular Horse & Farm Exhibits. Equine Affaire’s trade show, which is hailed as the largest horse-themed trade show in the east, filled several buildings with vendors selling everything from horse trailers to tack to horse show apparel to toys, jewelry, clothing, and more. Visitors also flocked to the Marketplace Consignment Shop all weekend long to sell and to purchase quality used goods. Special immersive activities and competitions were also a highlight each day. From shopping to networking to riding and learning, visitors of all ages were able to elevate their equestrian experience through the 2022 Equine Affaire in Ohio.

Several exciting competitions took place throughout the weekend, including the Versatile Horse & Rider Competition; the Mustang Trainers’ Incentive Program Challenge; and the International Liberty Horse Association Freestyle Invitational. The VHRC took place on Friday, April 8, with clinician Kevin Oliver as judge and clinician Lynn Palm as emcee. Twenty-five horse and rider pairs competed for $5,500 in cash and other prizes, including special product prize packages provided by Farnam for the top ten finishers. The first-place winners were Brenda Hanson and PVF Frosted Ace, who won $2,500 in cash, a Champion rosette, a Farnam product prize package, and the coveted title of Equine Affaire Versatile Horse & Rider Champion. The Mustang TIP Challenge took place in three parts on Friday, April 8 and Saturday, April 9, and featured both youth and adults who competed for $20,000 in prize money. For these competitors, the Mustang TIP Challenge was the culmination of 100 days spent gentling a feral mustang and preparing each horse to compete in a pattern class, a handling and conditioning class and a trail class.  The overall winner of the finals was Garrett Shanks and his mustang, Dreamin of Amazing Grace. Finally, the ILHA Invitational Freestyle took place on Friday, April 8, and Saturday, April 9, featuring horses and handlers who performed liberty routines. The winners of the ILHA Invitational Freestyle were Melissa Barnett and Jamaican Me Marley. For full results, photos, or other details for all three competitions, please email arehnborg@equineaffaire.com.

Equine Affaire’s signature musical celebration of the horse, Fantasia, returned as a major highlight of the event, and enthusiastic crowds filled the coliseum each night for the two-hour musical variety equestrian show. Attendance on Thursday night doubled compared to 2019, while the Friday and Saturday night performances sold out completely! Sponsored by Absorbine, Fantasia featured equestrian performers of all shapes, sizes and talents, including the Mini Doves, a group of miniature horses expertly handled by a team of youths; the 2nd Cavalry Brigade Band and the 6th Ohio Mounted Buglers; the Young Guns Drill Team; liberty rider Luke Gingerich and his horse, Tinseltowns Whizard; the Drentwett family of performers in multiple acts; Jenny Vidbel O’Donnell with a 16-horse liberty act; and many more.

Equine Affaire wouldn’t be possible without the support of its sponsors, including Absorbine, sponsor of Fantasia; Farnam, sponsor of the Courtesy Shopping Bag and prizes for the 2022 Versatile Horse & Rider Competition; Rod’s Western Palace, sponsor of the Rod’s Arena; US Equestrian, sponsor of the US Equestrian Arena; and Wahl, sponsor of the Wahl demo ring.
